Why clean carpets matter for babies and toddlers

Somewhere around seven months to one year old your lively little bundle of joy will start to get mobile. Crawling around on the floor (or sometimes shuffling on their bottoms!) is usually the way that babies begin to explore their environment, and begin the journey from infant to toddler.

It’s an exciting time for a parent – but also a challenging one. Suddenly your precious baby is exposed to all sorts of hazards. The first thing that probably springs to mind in the list of crawling concerns is the risk of the baby suffering physical injuries from falling, or sticking a finger in an electrical socket. Then there’s the threat of babies picking up and swallowing something that is a choking hazard, or perhaps even accessing a sharp object reachable from floor level.

It’s a minefield out there, and some serious baby-proofing is required!

One thing that may not be immediately obvious though is the danger posed by the dirt, grime, allergens and germs that are embedded in your carpeting.

To ensure the safety and well-being of your baby or toddler, clean carpets are crucial.

From carpet cleaning to flood damage, our services are built around customer satisfaction.

When babyproofing your home, consider the carpets

When you’re rushing around in a tizz baby-proofing your home, take a break from those all-important tasks like installing stair gates and cupboard safety locks, and think beyond dangling blind cords and trailing electric cables. Consider the carpets.

Carpeting adds warmth and comfort to your living areas – the ideal soft, cushioning surface for babies to crawl and toddle on, you would imagine. All is not what it appears, however. Your carpets may look clean on the surface, but they can harbour hidden hazards deep in the pile and concealed in their fibres.

When babies crawl on carpets they stir up dirt, bacteria, pollen and other particles that can be inhaled. A study in the USA, using a robotic crawling baby, found that infants moving on carpets inhale all sorts of nasties into the deepest regions of their lungs.

There’s no need to panic and rip out your carpets, however. Carpeting remains a good choice for toddlers to find their feet on, because it provides a soft landing, good traction, and is a good sound insulator in a noisy environment.

Parents and babies can enjoy their carpets – but they need to be properly cleaned and maintained.

How to keep your carpets baby and child-safe

Start as you mean to go on. If you’re having new carpeting installed into your home when you have a baby or toddler (or if you are planning to start a family in the near future) pick carpet that is stain resistant, hypoallergenic and easy to clean.

It’s also a good idea to instil good hygiene practices right from the beginning, by encouraging everyone to remove their outdoor shoes when entering, to prevent traipsing in dirt onto the carpet.

A good carpet cleaning regimen should include:

  • Regular vacuuming (at least twice a week), preferably using a vacuum fitted with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filter to remove even the most microscopic particulates.
  • Spot cleaning – react quickly to cleaning up spills by blotting (rather than rubbing) using a mild detergent and water.
  • Steam cleaning with a commercial cleaner is effective for sanitising carpets in-between deep cleans, but take care to use only hot water without any potentially dangerous chemicals. You’ll also need to be aware that the carpets will need several hours to dry out after DIY steam cleaning.
  • Professional Deep Cleaning, every six to 12 months, will safely remove dirt and detritus from deep within the carpets, using no harmful or toxic detergents or chemicals.
